Position Announcement - Coordinator of Civic Engagement Learning

Coordinator of Civic Engagement Learning

Pace Center

http://pace.princeton.edu

POSITION SUMMARY

The mission of the Pace Center, Princeton's center for civic engagement, is to integrate civic engagement with the teaching and learning mission of Princeton University.  Pace helps all members of the extended Princeton community to identify and address issues of public concern through engaged scholarship, active citizenship, and effective public leadership for the purpose of building stronger communities and societies throughout the world. The Pace Center's work is directly aimed at Princeton's unofficial motto: "in the nation's service, and in the service of all nations."

The Pace Center connects constituents with high-quality opportunities to thoughtfully address civic problems and have an impact, whether through course work, independent research, volunteer activity, extracurricular projects, internships, fellowships, or professional opportunities. Because our constituency includes all segments of Princeton's population - undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni - the work takes slightly different form as appropriate for the participants. The core values of engaged citizenship remain constant:  (1) recognition that we all have an obligation and an opportunity to work collaboratively to improve our communities; (2) active involvement in the democratic process, including thoughtful and regular participation in deliberative discussion, respect for diverse opinions, and recognition of the value of every community member's contribution; (3) sustained focus on solving public problems using academic, intellectual, and technical skills and building on informed understandings of communities' needs and assets; and (4) commitment to effective leadership and collaborative work to promote the public good.

At the Pace Center, engaged learning has two prongs, which support students' work to address public problems: development of subject-specific knowledge about public issues and development of skills to support effective public participation. The forum for this teaching and learning is outside the classroom, but the incumbent will encourage students to make connections between their extracurricular and curricular learning.

Key responsibilities:

            4. Work with academic departments to support and develop opportunities in civic engagement. Advise students as they pursue research projects directed at addressing and solving public problems.

            5. Monitor, develop, and share information about best practices in civic engagement at other universities and professional associations, and collaborate with colleagues at peer institutions.

            6. Direct Scholars in the Schools, a partnership with area school districts in which graduate students teach creative lessons drawn from their scholarly interests.

            7. Prepare applications for external funding.

            8. As a spokesperson for Pace, educate students, faculty, alumni, and campus and community partners about civic engagement.
