Colleges and Universities Make Uneven Progress In Internationalizing Their Campuses, ACE Analysis Finds

From the American Council on Education:

Despite ongoing efforts to broaden global knowledge and understanding, an analysis by the Center for International Initiatives at the American Council on Education (ACE) finds that internationalization is not a high priority on most college campuses.

Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses: 2008 Edition is the second in a series, following a 2001 study, on the policies and practices of colleges and universities in furthering internationalization. When possible, the report compares the 2001 data with the most recently collected 2006 data. The results, taken from a survey of more than 2,700 colleges and universities, present an overview of U.S. higher education institutions as well as information by institutional type.

While there has been some progress since 2001, ACE's 2006 data found that gains have been slow and uneven, few areas registered sharp increases, and some experienced declines.

UNESCO Portal on Higher Education Institutions

I received the following announcement from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation last week:

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has established a Portal on Higher Education Institutions that is now available online at: http://www.unesco.org/education/portal/hed-institutions.

The Portal provides access to (1) higher education institutions sanctioned either by government or other competent authorities and (2)  general information about higher education, accreditation, quality  assurance and related subjects in various countries. It is an entry point  to each country's institutions and information and not a centralized  database or international "list." The Portal has been developed by an International Steering Group convened by UNESCO that has been working for the past several years.   We at the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) have been  part of this effort. The Portal currently includes information from 12 countries and will be expanded to incorporate additional countries over  time. The information from individual countries is made available through  links on the Portal site. Each country's data remain within the control of  the participating country and have not been transferred to UNESCO. For the  United States, the Portal includes links to the CHEA and USDE databases of  institutions and programs accredited by U.S. accrediting organizations  recognized by CHEA or USDE or both.  The U.S. site also includes  access to information about credential evaluation and financial  assistance. The Portal will assist students, faculty, administrators, employers and  other interested parties with reliable and useful information about higher education institutions and accreditation or quality assurance bodies.

Announcement: Institute for Constitutional Studies

From H-Citizenship:

The Institute for Constitutional Studies is pleased to announce its ninth annual residential summer research seminar, to be held June 8-14, 2008, in Washington, D.C. This year's topic is "The Influence of Religion on Constitutional Thought."  Judge Michael McConnell (Tenth Circuit United States Court of Appeals) and Professor Mark Noll (University of Notre Dame) will teach the seminar.  The application deadline has been extended to May 5.

Description: Religious thinking has influenced many of the most fundamental features of American constitutional thought.  This seminar will explore some of those developments, with focused discussion of selected readings in the morning sessions and paper presentations in the afternoon.  Among the topics that may be considered are: (1) Puritan and Reformed Protestant contributions to constitutionalism, republicanism, and revolution; (2) the colonial Great Awakening (Jonathan Edwards) and ideals of society; (3) William Penn and Quaker ideas of political order; (4) Anglicanism, constitutional monarchy, and Loyalist protest; (5) Presbyterian ecclesiology (e.g., John Witherspoon) and ideas of federalism and representation; (6) Baptist theology (including the rejection of infant baptism, e.g., Isaac Backus) and rising individualism and rejection of religious establishment; (7) Masonic ideas (and opposition to them) in the formation of early republican ideology; (8) varying religious appropriations of the Enlightenment; (9) the Second Great Awakening and the rise of voluntarism and civil society; (10) the religious roots of abolitionism and proslavery thought; (11) Lincoln’s theology; (12) women as leaders in church and state; and (13) the 19th-century Roman Catholic critique (e.g., Orestes Brownson) of liberalism.

Participants are not limited to these topics, but may prepare and present papers ranging across the modern history of constitutional democracy, based on any significant connection between religious and constitutional thought, broadly construed. For more information please visit our website, http://docs.law.gwu.edu/ics/ or email us at icsgw@law.gwu.edu.

National Archives Primarily Teaching Workshops across the United States

Courtesy of April E-News from the National Archives-Central Plains Region:

We invite K-16 educators, librarians, media specialists, and museum educators to participate in one of seven sessions of Primarily Teaching, our summer institute for teachers, this year.  This workshop provides a varied program of lectures, demonstrations, analysis of documents, independent research, and group work that introduces teachers to the holdings and organization of the National Archives.  Participants will learn how to do research in historical records, create classroom material from records, and present documents in ways that sharpen students' skills and enthusiasm for history, social studies, and the humanities. Each participant selects and prepares to research a specific topic, searches the topic in the records of the National Archives, and develops a teaching unit that can be presented in his or her own classroom.  Presented by staff of the National Archives and Records Administration at the following locations:

· The National Archives in Washington, DC, June 24 - July 3, 2008

· The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Abilene, KS, July 17 - 25, 2008

DU Seeks Vice Provost for Internationalization

The University of Denver seeks applications for the academic position of Vice Provost for Internationalization.  Reporting to the Provost, the person filling this position will be expected to:
• Develop a strategy for taking the University to a new level of prominence in international education.
• Lead and manage the University’s Office of Internationalization, which is responsible for Study Abroad, including the Cherrington Global Scholars Program; International Service Learning; International Students and Scholar Services; and the English Language Center.
• Implement, promote, and assess the University’s internationalization initiatives by working closely with the provost, academic deans, administrative offices, and faculty committees.
• Engage with national and international organizations that further international education.
• Work with University offices to bridge the gap between international education and multicultural education.
• Build on existing relationships with overseas universities and other institutions and help to develop new ones in cooperation with academic units. This position will require significant international travel.

The position requires:
• A record of administrative success in fields related to international education at the university level.
• An ability to work with academic deans and faculty in the development of an institution-wide internationalization strategy.
• An appropriate graduate degree, with a preference for a Ph.D. in an academic discipline and credentials that could qualify the applicant for a tenured faculty position.
• A strong and articulate commitment to the goals and values of international education and engagement.
• A demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse communities and a commitment to the principle of inclusive excellence.

The University of Denver is an independent institution offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs.  Founded in 1864, it is the oldest university in the Rocky Mountain West and one of four research universities in Colorado. The University has taken strong initiatives in internationalizing the curriculum in recent decades, developing significant programs at the graduate and undergraduate level across the academic and professional disciplines.  The University’s flagship study abroad program, the Cherrington Global Scholars Program, is perhaps the most generously subsidized study abroad program in the U.S.  The University ranks second among research universities nationally for the percentage (70%) of undergraduates who have studied abroad.  The University has also committed to bridging international education with U.S. multicultural education efforts.

For preferred consideration, applications should be completed on-line by April 30, 2008.  The position will remain open until filled and applications will continue to be accepted until such time. A CV, cover letter, statement of philosophy of internationalization, and the names, addresses and e-mails of three references are required as part of the online application. As a minimum, cover letter should address the requirements outlined in the job summary.

The online application can be found at www.dujobs.org.

Questions and inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Eric Gould at egould@du.edu or 303.871.4571.

The University of Denver is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff and encourages applications from women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans.  DU is an EEO/AA employer.
